What to Expect in Your First Mermaiding Session

Curious about mermaiding but not sure what happens in that first session? We walk you through exactly what to expect — and what to bring.

MermaidingMonofinBeginners

Mermaiding is unlike any other water sport. It combines elements of freediving, dance and performance — and your first session is designed to make you fall in love with it before you ever put on the monofin.

Before the Monofin We always start with body undulation on dry land. The mermaid kick — the signature fluid up-and-down motion — originates from the hips and travels through the spine like a wave. On land, with no buoyancy to contend with, you can really feel whether you're moving correctly. Most students need about 20 minutes of land practice before the movement starts to feel natural.

Getting the Fit Right The monofin is not a one-size-fits-all piece of equipment. Our coaches will check that the foot pockets are secure (no heel lift), that the blade stiffness matches your body weight, and that you can exit the fin safely if needed. A poorly fitted monofin is uncomfortable and inefficient — a well-fitted one feels like an extension of your body.

Into the Water Your first pool entry with the monofin is managed carefully. We use a shallow ledge or the steps so you can get used to the weight and buoyancy of the fin before pushing off. The first skill is floating face-down in the monofin — finding that neutral position where you don't have to kick constantly to stay at the surface.

The First Undulation Once you're comfortable floating, your coach will guide your first undulation through the water. Do not try to go fast. The goal is to feel the wave travel from your chest through your hips to the fin. Speed comes with practice; the movement pattern has to come first.

What to Bring Swimsuit (one-piece or bikini are both fine), a towel, and an open mind. We provide the monofin, wetsuit if needed, and all safety equipment. No previous freediving experience is required for the introductory session, though comfort in water is assumed.
