Preparing for Your First Finswimming Competition: A Complete Guide

Competing in finswimming for the first time? From choosing your disciplines to race-day protocols, here's everything you need to know before your first meet.

Finswimming is one of the most spectacular aquatic sports — and also one of the least known outside specialist circles. If you have been training for a season and are considering your first competition, this guide covers everything you need to know.

Understanding the Disciplines CMAS sanctioned finswimming competitions include surface finswimming (SF) — where athletes use a snorkel and bifins or monofin at the surface — and apnea finswimming (BF/MF) — where athletes swim underwater on a single breath. For your first competition, we recommend choosing one or two SF disciplines before adding underwater events.

Choosing Your Distances SF50 (50m surface) and SF100 (100m surface) are the most common entry disciplines for first-time competitors. SF400 demands greater endurance and tactical racing experience. For most athletes doing their first meet, SF50 + SF100 is the ideal combination.

Equipment Check Competition rules specify acceptable equipment precisely. Your monofin or bifins must conform to CMAS dimension limits. Your snorkel tube must meet length requirements. Masks and wetsuits have specific rules that vary by discipline. Check the published rules for the specific meet — each governing body may have slight variations.

Race-Day Protocols • Arrive 90 minutes early for equipment inspection • Complete your warm-up in the designated lanes (usually 60–45 minutes before your race) • Report to the marshalling area 15 minutes before your heat • Enter the water on the starter's signal only — early entries result in disqualification

Pacing Your SF50 The SF50 is a sprint — but it is not simply swimming as fast as possible. The start (either in-water push-off or starting block) sets up the first 15m. The middle phase requires maintaining high but sustainable frequency. The finish requires a final 10m acceleration. Study your stroke rate data from training to identify your optimal cadence.

Post-Race Recovery After a sprint effort, the lactic acid build-up can be severe. Light, active recovery swimming at very low intensity for 10–15 minutes will clear lactate faster than passive rest. Do not sit in the stands immediately after a race.
